Upper Left Back Pain: Dealing With It
Upper left back pain can be significant. Find out what you can do to treat this pain and to overcome it.
Upper left back pain is often caused by the tearing, stretching or overuse of the muscles and ligaments located in this area. These muscles are attached to your spinal column and shoulder blade. They work with you as you do virtually any movement with your left arm. Like the right side of your back, these muscles can easily become out of position and even damaged if you use them improperly. The good news is that you can find relief from this type of pain.
I have suffered from this specific pain before. It aches and throbs, or hurts horribly as the pain of a torn muscle can. If this is the type of pain you have, there are several things you can do to get through it successfully. First, if you are severe pain or the condition has become chronic, it is important to speak with your doctor. With my torn muscle, I had to speak to the doctor to get medications to ease the pain. I recommend this.
The most common way to slow pain in muscles that are aching from overuse is to use anti inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen. You should also do some light stretches of the muscles. The upper left back pain you feel is often do to the muscle contracting and trying to get back into place, but it is struggling to do so. When you stretch out those muscles, slightly, you help them to fit better in place. Stretching can do wonders for pain relief here.
If the pain does not stop, it may be necessary to consider surgery to correct the problem. Upper left back pain normally does not require this level of treatment, yet when the condition worsens, it can. I normally allow these muscles to play a role in my weight training (when nothing hurts of course) as strengthening the muscles is one of the best ways to avoid future pain.
